Podium Waterproofing

Podium waterproofing involves applying a robust, seamless membrane to elevated structural slabs—such as plazas, rooftop gardens, or vehicular decks—that sit above occupied spaces like parking levels. This system is critical because it must withstand “overburden” loads, including soil, landscape planters, paving, and vehicle traffic.

Podium waterproofing

Common Waterproofing Methods
Liquid-Applied Membranes (LAM): These form a monolithic, fully bonded coating that cures into a rubber-like elastomeric layer. Pure Polyurethane (PU) systems are highly recommended for large spans (over 5,000 sq ft) due to their high elongation and crack-bridging capabilities.
Sheet Membrane Systems: These include prefabricated rubber or bitumen sheets. APP-modified bituminous membranes (typically 4mm thick) are favored for their high tensile strength and puncture resistance.
Hybrid Systems: Products like PU Hybrid (PU combined with acrylic) are used for medium-sized areas (2,500–5,000 sq ft), offering a balance of toughness and elasticity.

Crystalline/Internal Treatment: Systems like INFRA-TECT® react with free lime in the concrete to form a permanent hydrogel within the slab’s pores, providing internal waterproofing that never needs reapplication.

Waterproofing Products

Dr. Fixit Flexi PU 270(I): A liquid-applied polyurethane membrane often specified in method statements for large hardscape podium areas.
Asian Paints SmartCare PU Magnum: A high-performance polyurethane coating designed for UV and weather resistance, typically applied with a 100 gsm geotextile reinforcement between coats.
Tremco-Tremproof 201/60: A two-component PU system that forms a seamless membrane capable of bridging cracks up to 2mm.

Dr. Fixit Torchshield P4160: A 4mm thick APP-modified bituminous membrane reinforced with polyester for superior tear resistance.
Liquid Rubber Polyurethane Deck Coating: A user-friendly, non-toxic option with an average rating of 4.7/5 stars from reviewers for its smooth finish and ease of use.

Key Components of a Podium System

Surface Preparation: Thorough cleaning and repair of the concrete slab, often including a 50x50mm mortar fillet at internal corners to eliminate weak spots.
Priming: Essential for maximum adhesion of the membrane to the concrete substrate.
Drainage Layer: Installation of a high-flow drainage composite (drainage mat) or HDPE drain cell boards to prevent hydrostatic pressure buildup.
Protection Layer: A protective screed or board is laid over the membrane to shield it from UV rays, foot traffic, and mechanical damage from the overburden
